Squelch

2 min read
Every player

Squelch keeps the radio quiet until a call is strong enough to be worth hearing. Turned up, only strong callers get through. Turned down, you hear everyone in range, even the ones who are mostly noise.

3.4.1

The knob

It goes from 0 to 9 and starts on 3. At 0 everything gets through. At 9 a caller needs at least 60% signal.

  1. Most radios: the wheel's Squelch slice, or the radio window's list
  2. PRC-148: MODE, then SQUELCH
  3. PRC-163: 4 SQL turns it up one. It stops at 9
The PRC-163 can only turn it up for nowIts face has no way to turn squelch down yet, so go up one step at a time.
3.4.2

When a call is cut

A call below your squelch is silent and makes no click. The radio still shows it: the LINK page says BELOW SQUELCH next to its strength, so you can see someone is trying.
